The SKILLED TRADE | SOUND BUSINESS project is research project I am conducting to gather information about people and businesses in and around the skilled trade, construction, and artisan industries (people/businesses that make stuff with their hands).  The research will consist of online surveys, email interviews, and in some cases, one-on-one phone interviews (for those that are willing).

I AM NOT TRYING TO SELL YOU ANYTHING.

I am merely asking for your help.

I am trying to develop the data I receive from these initial surveys and interviews, from those that want to participate, into a curriculum for a series of online courses that will serve as a guide for individuals and businesses in these industries to start, grow, and/or build a legacy business.

I have spent the last 19 years working in and around these industries, owning and operating multiple businesses, providing consulting services to individuals and businesses alike, and designing and implementing systems for these businesses.

I have a pretty good idea of what the content of the course will contain, but I want to make sure I get as much information as possible and specifically tailor the course to meet the needs of this particular audience.

Here are answers to some of the questions I have already received:

WILL MY INFO BE SHARED?

No.  Your information will not be shared publicly or with any third party.  I really just need some real-world data about the struggles you face and the successes you have had (or want to have).  I want to hear your story.

WHAT IF I DON’T WORK IN OR AROUND THESE INDUSTRIES?

Even if you don’t work in or around these industries, you probably know someone that does.  I would ask that you tell him/her about this project or ask that person to reach out to me (email – connect@shawnvandyke.com ).  I am trying to connect with as many people as possible that can provide some input for the research.

WHAT DOES SHAWN GET OUT OF MY PARTICIPATION IN THIS PROJECT?

I want to take the information I get from you and combine it with the feedback and information I get from others and leverage the collective wisdom contained within the research to develop an online course that serves individuals and small businesses by providing them with a step-by-step guide to start, grow, and build a legacy business – a business that can be passed onto future generations.  Most small trade/craft businesses die with the owner, and I would like to help change that fact.
